The purpose of dentures is to replace missing teeth from tooth decay, gum disease, or if one or more teeth were knocked out from an injury. Dentures are removable and help you get back your smile and improve your overall health by allowing you to speak and eat properly.

If you are considering getting dentures but don’t know where to start, check out the most frequently asked questions we get about dentures below.

How much should my dentures cost?

There are two options available in dentures. You may be advised to opt for partial dentures or a full set of dentures, depending on the condition of your teeth. Partial dentures or a complete set of dentures can be anything from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand.. But the price also depends on a few factors, the denturist will give you the best advice.

What are the materials used in dentures?

Modern dentures are made from technologically advanced materials. The base is acrylic, the same colour as your gums and designed with acrylic teeth. Partial dentures are usually made of metal covered in plastic to form a structural base that can be clasped to the healthy teeth in your mouth.

How long will my dentures last?

Dentures made of acrylic resin need replacement every five to eight years. As you age, your dentures may need to be realignedwith the changing shape of your mouth. Rebasing dentures involves remaking the base of the denture, keeping the existing denture teeth intact.

Will my dentures hurt?

New dentures need to fit well. Even if they do, you need some time to adjust to them. Dentures need about five to eight hours to settle into your mouth after the fitting. The gums need some time to adjust to the appliance in your mouth. The time frame differs from person to person.

Will my dentures stay in place?

Partial dentures hold on to your existing natural teeth but your gums and mouth will take some time to get adjusted to the new appliance clasped to your natural teeth. Talk to your denturies if they feel uncomfortable. You might be given an adhesive to keep them in place. Implants are also useful to do the job if you don’t want an adhesive.

What are Partial Dentures?

If you have some teeth missing and the rest are healthy, partial dentures are recommended. They are made of a metal base that is covered in a gum coloured plastic for a natural look that blends with your mouth. Sometimes metal hooks are used around the molars to hold the dentures in place. Your denturist will tell you whether you need partial dentures or a full set.

How do I clean my dentures?

Dentures need gentle, daily care just like your teeth do. Acrylic dentures are porous and prone to absorbing stains over time. Scrub them with a soft toothbrush using soap and water. Toothpaste can be abrasive on some materials, wearing down the gloss coating and making them prone to staining. You can use store bought denture cleaners after you have scrubbed them clean. Don’t try to whiten your dentures with bleach. It could wear out the colour. Check with your dental health provider about the best brands and options.
