Immediate Dentures, a Temporary Solution

An immediate denture is what it says. It is placed immediately after the teeth have been extracted. It cannot and will not function or feel like a denture placed over healed oral tissue. Immediate Dentures provide a certain amount of function and aesthetics for the patient. Approximately 6 months after receiving your immediate dentures, the dentures will have to be rebased, relined or a new denture will have to be made. As a note, there is no such thing as a “permanent denture” as your mouth will continue to change shape over time. Well-made dentures can last you 5 to 10 years, but they may need to be adjusted or re-made depending on the healing process.

Advantages

Form, size and arrangement of your teeth can be duplicated

Immediate dentures are inserted and act as a bandage to reduce bleeding

Immediate Dentures protect tissues at the extraction site from irritation from tongue & food

Immediate Dentures enable you to establish speech patterns easier without the normal wait time for conventional dentures

Replacing your teeth immediately helps to maintain the structure of your face

Allows you to adapt to having dentures

What to Expect When the Denture Is First Placed

Do not remove the immediate denture for the first 24 hours to control pain & minimize bleeding

Minimize swelling after extraction with an ice pack where extractions occurred, 15 minutes on 15 minutes off

Take Tylenol or other medication prescribed by your doctor for pain

On the first day, remove your denture 4 to 5 times and rinse with warm salt water

Eat soft foods for the 1st week & gradually work up to harder foods to determine what you can handle

Take up to 1000 mg of vitamin C for the first week to aid healing of the mouth

Refraining from alcohol consumption & cigarette smoking is beneficial

Use a denture adhesive to hold the denture in place

Visit your denturist to address any sore spots

Disadvantages of Immediate Dentures

More visits to the denturist to watch for changes in the gums & mouth function

Due to frequent changes in teeth after tooth removal, immediate dentures usually need to be re-fitted within several months

Fit is not as accurate as conventional dentures made at a later date when gums have healed

Because of teeth still being in place, you cannot see how dentures will look in your mouth until natural teeth are removed

Immediate dentures are more costly because of additional time required for construction
